A group of talented club players have been selected to play in the Yarrows Taranaki Bulls first pre-season match against Manawatu on Friday night in Hawera.

Coach Willie Rickards has named a team of 25 players for the first hit out of the season with the intention of rewarding players who had strong CMK club rugby campaigns.

“We’ve been really pleased with several players throughout the club rugby programme and now they have an opportunity to represent Taranaki as we build into the Mitre 10 Cup.”

Plenty of players throughout the starting XV have played for Taranaki during the regular season including prop Chris Gawler, hooker Bradley Slater, lock Leighton Price, first five-eighth Daniel Waite, midfielder Brayton Northcott-Hill and fullback Jackson Ormond.

Rickards said in pre-season matches it’s important to have a mixture of experience across the team.

Slater will captain the side in the absence of Mitchell Brown.

This will be Taranaki’s first of three pre-season matches, with games against Auckland and Waikato to follow.

Kick off is at 6pm and admission is free.

Rickards will name his Mitre 10 Cup squad next week.
